After a worrying journey to Stockport with players getting stuck on the way there, the team were all up and raring to go. The starting 5 was a completely different one to what we had had before due to some injuries but Shauna Harrison, Jd Quinn, Iona Mckerrew, Beth Rutherford and Brigha Allen.
The girls got off to an amazing hard playing first quarter pushing for fast break and running plays through, doing everything a coach could ever ask for. They finished the first quarter 23-0 up and looked ready to stop Stockport scoring completely. Starting the second quarter Stockport looked unphased by the first scoring in the first minute, Hatters pushed on with points from Eleanor Neath and Emma Cheetam and free throws by Emily Hobson. Finishing the half 33 16 up.
At half time the word on the bench was we can win this game but we need to step up and play like the 1st quarter not like the second. The second half was under way with a big basket from Iona and then a great drive from Shauna resulting in free throws. The 3rd quarter ended with Hatters 51-26 up and ready for anything. So when the 4th started the girls looked like they were going from strength to strength fast break and trailer options being set up and offence being run through looking for more options, just by watching you would not know this team was young and many only 12 or 13 and still having another year or two at this age group. The fourth quarter brought score from two players who are new to basketball and have been working so hard this season Jess Fox And Jd Quinn, Jess had had a few opportunities to score but manager to concentrate on this one looking constantly at where she was going and determined to score. Jd had taken probably about 15 16 drives in the game and had gone to the free throw line a couple of times after drawing fouls but this was the last 15 second of the game and she took a strong base line drive with the encouragement from her team of drive Jd she caught the pass off Shauna and drove strong. It was an amazing thing to end the game on when she scored.
The final score ended 67 – 38 to Hatters an amazing game and great team work was had all the way through the game, even with two players only just coming back from injuries and one still injured we worked well. Coach Becci Parker said after the game ‘I’m so proud of what the girls have achieved all season they have realised basketball is not just a sport and is not just for fitness it’s a way of life and the people around you are you family, the girls are still working hard and we hope we make play offs but watch this space.’
