Hatters young team started out with the trademark full court defence against local Yorkshire neighbours Kingston Panthers to earn a lead of 24 – 18 going into the 2nd quarter. Hatters continued to dominate through the second quarter with a run of 21- 8 which created a comfortable position of 45 – 26 going into the half time break.
Unfortunately the long break at the half seemed to have a negative effect on the team as they appeared to have lost the intensity and focus from the first half!…Kingston came out the stronger team from the break forcing Hatters into a number of turnovers resulting in a disastrous third quarter which saw the visitors claw back to within 8 points.
After strong words from Coach Gayle the team went out in the last quarter with more defensive determination and control on offence, and despite losing Kendal James and Courtney Bennett to foul trouble the Hatters hung on to win the game 74 – 63. It was always going to be a challenging fixture as the side was without team Captain, Rachel Campbell and England U18 trio Gayle, Turner and Lowry but it was good to see other players step up on the day, which demonstrates the depth of this Hatters development squad.
