Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters remain joint-second in the WBBL Championship, and maintain the pressure on the leaders, after an 87-61 defeat of Manchester Mystics in Saturday night’s Yorkshire-Lancashire clash.
A strong performance from the hosts was epitomised by 26 points and 8 rebounds for Skye Reese, supported by 23 points and 7 boards for the league’s leading scorer Helen Naylor. Hatters have won three of their last four games, and remain unbeaten in five outings at home in the league this season. Mystics, meanwhile, have lost four of their last five.
The game was tight in the early exchanges, Hatters edging the first quarter 23-18, before establishing a double digit lead in the second stanza at 40-30 as Naylor and Stephanie Gandy had already reached double digits themselves with 10 points each.
And the hosts took control of the game immediately after the half time break, starting the third period with an irrepressible 12-0 surge, ignited by Reese, to establish a 52-30 lead. From there they would not be threatened, as their advantage only grew through to the final buzzer.
