The first round of the cup for the U18’s resulted in an emphatic victory at home v Cheshire Panthers. The first quarter began with a 26-0 unanswered run by the Hatters behind high pressure defence causing Cheshire to make turnovers and Hatters to make the most of their fast break opportunities. At the end of the first quarter the score was 36-8 in favour of the home side with Bennett scoring 12 points with perfect free throw shooting. Hatters again began the quarter with an unanswered run of 14-0 sparked by a Georgia Gayle three pointer. 70% free throw shooting during this quarter helped Hatters to notch up 40 points and go into half time the 76-18 leaders with all players already on the scoresheet. Hatters eased the foot off the gas in the third quarter scoring 24 points and Shanice Turner hitting the 100 point basket to close out the quarter 100-26 leaders. A lower scoring fourth quarter saw Hatters focus on their discipline playing the zone offence and containing Cheshire’s offence with the full-time whistle resulting in a 117-33 win, and a place in the quarter-final of the Cup versus Reading Rockets at home.
