Westfield Health Hatters travelled down to Cardiff this past Saturday for their second regular season match up against Cardiff Archers. The two teams met before Easter break in Sheffield where the Hatters beat the Archers 90-57. This game would not be much different.
After winning the tap, the Hatters were unable to put points on the board as Cardiff forced a turnover that they converted into two points. For the first quarter the two teams would battle back and forth before the buzzer which left Cardiff in the lead 23-20 to start the second quarter. The Hatters fuelled by words from Coach Ellis came out in the second quarter with more energy; however, Cardiff shot very well and were able to keep pace until the 3 min mark in the third quarter. The Hatters would eventually take over the lead and push it to end the second half up 38 – 51.
“We started communicating better on defence towards the end of the half but it still isn’t where it needs to be,” said Coach Ellis at half time. With those words, the Hatters continued to pick up the intensity and put the pressure on Cardiff taking a more commanding lead led by Helen Naylor’s 28 points. At the end of the third, Hatters were up by 26.
The final quarter saw the Hatters break the 100 point mark for the third time this season. They defeated the Archers for the second time this season, 101 – 60 and have managed to keep their undefeated record. The Hatters have just two regular season games left before playoffs and final fours.
Top scorers were H. Naylor 28, Steph Gandy 19 and Julie Page with 16.
