On Saturday, the Westfield Health Hatters suited up for their second match against Team Northumbria. The teams first met on the 26th of January in the National Cup Final where the Hatters battled to a 12 point victory. This time around, the Hatters left no question as to who would with this game jumping out to a 12-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game. Naomi Campbell started off the scoring for the Hatters after she was fouled on a drive to the basket. From then on the Hatters team work and discipline gave them to a 29-11 lead going into the second quarter.
The Hatters would continue to dominate the game pushing their lead to 18 by the end of the first half although Northumbria would only lose the second quarter by 1 point. Helen Naylor had another big offensive game for the Hatters as she led all scorers with 23 points. At half time, Coach Ellis stated, “This game is not over,” explaining that she expected the team to continue to play disciplined and work hard for the remaining 20 minutes.
The Hatters would come out fired up once again in the second half playing solid team defense and forcing a lot of errors from Team Northumbria. Julie Page who had not been called for one foul in the first half ended up picking up 4 fouls in the third quarter. The defensive efforts of both Campbell and Page were good enough to keep stop Northumbria’s center for doing any real damage. The Hatters would lead 71-45 at the end of the third and go on to win the game 97-59. The Hatters remain undefeated in league play as they head into a double header weekend playing Manchester on Saturday and Loughborough on Sunday.
