The Westfield Health Hatters have finally matched up against last year’s league title holders, UWIC Archers. The two teams have a history of rivalry as they have been the top two teams in the league for the past couple of years. This season, the Hatters who remain undefeated are very far ahead of the Archers who are fighting for a playoff spot. After losing a tough game to Barking Abbey on Saturday UWIC came out fired up behind Olympic guard Stefanie Collins. They kept up the pace with the Hatters in the first two quarters. The Hatters took a while to warm up but the two teams would end the first half with the Hatters leading, 42-36.
Coach Ellis demanded that her players step up at half-time and play Hatters basketball. At the start of the third quarter, the Hatters went on an 8-0 run and began to push the lead to they we up by 20. They held the Archers in the second half to just 21 points. Led by Steph Gandy (36), Helen Naylor (22) and Lauren Thomas-Johnson (18), the Hatters were able to defeat UWIC 90-57 to continue on with their undefeated season.
The Hatters will hit the road to face the Archers again after Easter break for a rematch down in Wales on April 6th. After clenching the league title, the Hatters have three more games left on their schedule before heading to final fours.
