Georgia Gayle’s 17 points were not enough to prevent the U18 Women ending their three game trip to Portugal with an 80-51 loss to their hosts.
England started slowly and were down by 16 points midway through the second period, but Lee Ryan’s side rallied to cut the deficit to 40-28 going into the locker room at half-time.
A 14-3 run from the home side to open the second half effectively ended the chances of a comeback, but England’s defence stepped and they scored nine unanswered points in the final minutes of the third period and cut the lead to 58-38 at the last break.
At 67-51 down late on the game was as good as gone and then Portugal scored the last 13 points of the game to give the scoreline a more lopsided look.
Victoria Grey added 12 points for England, while Melanie George finished with a double-double as she hit ten points and pulled down as many boards
