Sheffield United welcomed one of the most successful women’s sports clubs in the country to Bramall Lane to celebrate their recent cup success.

The Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters made history recently by becoming the first ever winners of the Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL) Trophy.

As special guests of Sheffield United, they paraded the trophy prior to kick-off at the Blades’ home league clash with Swindon Town.

They were joined by Graham Moore, Chairman of not-for-profit health insurer and Blades sponsor Westfield Health.

Mr Moore, who was recently appointed Vice-President of Sheffield United, said: “We’d like to congratulate the Sheffield Hatters on their remarkable success. They have made history in the process and we’re really proud of their status as one of Britain’s most decorated teams.

“The Hatters, like Sheffield United, are a true example of a community club and it’s an honour to have welcomed them to Bramall Lane.

“They provide sporting opportunities for players of all ages and abilities and over the years, hundreds have joined the Hatters family by training and playing for the club, whilst many of their players and coaches pass on their experience to schools throughout Sheffield.

“We wish them every success for the future.”

The Sheffield Hatters were formed in the early 1960s, becoming the first women’s basketball team in England. They have since developed into one of the most successful women’s sports clubs in the country, winning 19 league titles, 15 championship titles and 16 national cups over the last 25 years.

Betty Codona MBE, Sheffield Hatters club founder and coach, said: “Being guests of Sheffield United and parading our trophy in front of the crowd at Bramall Lane was a wonderful experience for all our players and staff.

“As a club it is fantastic to be recognised for our achievements, but our success over the years would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our club volunteers who also deserve a special mention.

“I’d like to thank Sheffield United on behalf of the Hatters and hopefully it won’t be long before either club bring another trophy back to Sheffield.”
