Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters 86 (23,43,65) (Naylor 20, Gandy 20, Lowenthal 14)
Barking Abbey Crusaders 50 (15,29,33) (Johnson 12, Round 12, Whittingham 9)
Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters have secured third spot in the WBBL Championship after comprehensively beating fourth-placed Barking Abbey Crusaders 86-50 on Saturday afternoon. Helen Naylor and Stephanie Gandy scored 20 points each in what was a record winning margin for Hatters against this opposition, as they remain unbeaten with seven wins against Crusaders in the WBBL.
Hatters led from tip-to-buzzer after Gandy scored the opening two baskets of the game in an 8-0 start as they didn’t allow their visitors a score in the opening three minutes. Naylor added a three-pointer and when Julie Page scored the Hatters held an early double-digit lead at 15-4.
Crusaders got going and began to trade baskets, Sarah Round narrowing the gap to six with a three-pointer as they fought to keep their hopes of a top three finish alive. But Page added the next four points and the Sheffield lead was ten points once more.
And the game was decided when Hatters produced one of the best quarters of the season, outscoring Crusaders 22-4 in the third period to take a dominant 65-33 lead. Sheffield have held Barking to an average of just 49 points across their three meetings this season, and there was no way back for the visitors.
At the other end, Hatters are the league’s highest scorers having now scored more than 80 points in all of their games in a winning run of four on the bounce, looking to take great form into the Play-offs.
