City of Sheffield Hatters vs Derby Trailblazers
Hatters began their season in style by winning their first match away against Derby Trailblazers on Saturday 24th September. The new team for this season was: Abbey Whitehouse (4), Alice Fallon (5), Zoe Kateregga (6), Maisie Melady (7), Jess Morey (8), Esme Mortiner (9), Morgan (10), Laetitia Kasongo (12), Charlotte Timms (13), Vanessa Chinyere-oji (14) and Giana Modest (15). It was a struggle in the first half with the Trailblazers playing tough defence but the Sheffield girls pulled through to win the game 65 – 47.
The game started with a foul by Derby on Abbey as she drove to the basket giving her team two free shots and as they both went swiftly through the hoop the action began. With brilliant interceptions from both Alice and Laetitia and some responsible control from Zoe on the offence the game turned into an impossible game for the Derby team as they began to panic on Defence. Feeling the pressure from the team that came second in the league last year. With some tough offence and brutal defence the Hatters ended the quarter 14-2.
In the second quarter the Hatters began to slip out of their stride. But still retain their lead with some great shots from Abbey and some smart offence. And with the Derby coach getting a Technical foul things began to look up in the last few minutes of the quarter after a not so amazing start and the Sheffield girls ended the half at 28 opposed to Derby’s 21.
The second quarter saw the Hatters resume their winning streak as the girls began to calm down their offence and begin to show their winning skill. With Zoe getting some great defensive steals and Charlotte with some easy baskets the Hatters began to once again pull away from the opposition. And with Derby fouling left, right and centre the Sheffield girls were given even more free shots. They ended the 3rd quarter Derby 33 – Sheffield 45.
The final quarter saw the Hatters dominate the court as Alice scored 5 free shots and the entire team played hard defence with a full court press and some more clever use of the posts. The noise from the bench was unbelievable as the Hatters scored basket after basket and completely crushed any hope the opposing team had for victory. The final score was Hatter 65 – Trailblazers 47.
The top scorer for the Hatters this game was Zoe Kateregga with 16 points but hot on her heels with 15 was Abbey and not too far away with 12 was Charlotte Timms. Let’s hope the Hatters can keep up this winning trend throughout the season.
