Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters are into the WBBL Championship’s top four after beating previously third-placed Team Northumbria 100-66, leap-frogging them in the process and becoming the first team to score a century in the league this season.
It snapped a run of consecutive defeats for Hatters, whilst inflicting a first loss on their opponents since October. Sheffield have now won five of the last six meetings between these teams.

Turning point – An early unanswered run of 11 points saw Hatters take the lead at 16-6 on a Jennifer Ashton three-pointer, and they never trailed thereafter. The visitors got close, but an unstoppable 18-0 surge early in the third quarter settled the game as Krizstina Velkey scored seven points, and Northumbria were not allowed to score for five minutes. Hatters hit the century when Lauren Gregory scored on the last play of the game.
Key stat – Sheffield dominated on the boards, not allowing their visitors a single offensive rebound in the entire contest and out-rebounding them two-to-one (50-24). In addition, 14 offensive rebounds led to 16 second-chance points, with Gianna Woods picking up seven offensive boards.
Game hero(es) – Two players dominated the scoring for the victors: Helen Naylor had 24 points with six rebounds and five assists, while Krizstina Velkey scored key baskets in the game-winning run on her way to a double-double of 19 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
