City of Sheffield Hatters U18’s needed one last win against Nottingham Wildcats at home to confirm their top spot in the Northern League. Nottingham were in third place looking to overcome the 72-91 defeat against Hatters early in the new year.
Hatters began the game with some excellent defence restricting Nottingham to outside shots and moving the ball fast up court to finish the 1st quarter 21-9. Hatters relentless defence continued in the second quarter with Nottingham kept to scoring only 10 more points while Hatters continued to attack the Nottingham basket, gaining another 24 points. Hatters lead 45-19 at half time. Rebounding was the difference with Eleanor Goodwin and Jo Lowry taking 7 first half rebounds and Courtney Bennett taking 5. Hatters secured the game in the third quarter winning 22-12 half of the Hatters points coming from Shauna Harrison. Hatters began the final quarter 67-31 in the lead. Nottingham pulled back 5 points but the result was never in doubt, with Hatters confirming their first place in the Northern League with final score of 80-51. Points scorers Jo Lowry 25, Eleanor Goodwin and Shauna Harrison 16 points each, Courtney Bennett 9, Molly Axelby 5, JD Quinn 3, Millie Dooley 2, Arianna Fox 2 and Eleanor Neath 2. Top rebounding came from Courtney Bennett and Eleanor Goodwin with 9 each and Jo Lowry with 8. Hatters are now looking forward to preparing for play-off games against teams such as Southend, Sevenoaks, Peckham, Manchester and London Greenhouse Pioneers.
