Sevenoaks Suns 76 (15,40,59) (Carr 20, Clark 20, Nikitinaite 18)
Sevenoaks Suns have beaten Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters for the first time in the WBBL, 76-59, to progress to the WBBL Cup semi-finals. Suns came into the game on form and have now won four of their last five, led by 20 points each from Catherine Carr and Ta’Yani Clark, who added six rebounds and seven steals.
Suns started the game well and led early on, before Brittany Winborne emerged from the bench to hit nine first quarter points and Sheffield were in front when Stephanie Gandy’s three-pointer made the score 18-15 at the end of the first quarter.
But the visitors took over from there, dominating the second stanza. Carr’s triple put them in front at 24-21, in what became a run of seven unanswered points as Anne Pedersen scored consecutively. Hatters – the league’s highest-scoring team – scored just once in five minutes, and Suns had a double-figure lead when Carr hit another trey for 38-25, after what had become a 17-4 spell in total. Carr was 3/4 from beyond the arc in the first half, and already had 16 points.
Hatters got back to within one after the break, as Gandy – who led all scorers with 21 – scored eight points, making it 51-50. But Clarke settled the visitors with a couple of crucial baskets, before Gabriele Nikitinaite took over late on.
