Team Northumbria claimed a huge win over fellow WBBL Championship title challengers Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters, prevailing 77-69 on the road.

Fiona O’Dwyer led the way with an impressive 27 points, while Nicolette Fong Lyew Quee added 21 points as Northumbria completed the season double over Sheffield.

After an even start with the lead going back and forth in the early stages, before the visitors used a 9-2 run to gain the initiative and would lead by seven at the end of the first.

Sheffield hit back to close the gap in the second and tied the game at 38, but Northumbria scored the next basket to take a slender lead into the half-time break.

The visitors then pulled away when play resumed and led by as many as 11 points in the third period. The gap would be seven points heading into the final quarter, and Northumbria were able to hold on in the fourth to claim an important victory.

Sheffield suffered their third defeat of the league campaign, despite being led by Steph Gandy’s 17 points.
