Under 16 Conference North:
Leeds V Sheffield Hatters II
Result 49 – 66
By Anna Vann
Our girls travelled away to play an under 16 Leeds side that certainly brought their A game when the pair met at the end of 2019. Ultimately today the question was could our young team stand up to the task this time?
Q1 Within the opening moments of tip off ,Hatters went 3 up as Alicia scored a three point basket after some swift passing around the key gave her an opening.. The fast paced break style from the Hatters continued, allowing Nella to then net a 3 pointer, after a key defensive turnover by Alicia , who made a great pass choice , confusing the Leeds defence
All worked hard and Q2 was a miserable one for Leeds . They weren’t afforded a single basket in the whole ten minutes of this quarter . he Hatters shut each Leeds open offence down, despite every girl crashing to the floor on a dusty court ,and many decisions seeming to go unnoticed or against them according to the referees !
Q3 saw an invigorated Leeds side come out quickly, we seemed to be napping as they scored 5 baskets in very quick succession . Any lay up chance the Hatters had after winning the ball seemed to go anywhere but down …we had hit a drought …we were being broken much easier then the previous quarters and Leeds had the bit between their teeth …Hatters made tactical substitutions at the right time -Sharmaine brought the ball up as soon as she came on, dominating the edge of the key, and ending our dry spell after sending each attempt at a Leeds defence sideways .
Q4 and we needed to sew up this tie. Critical defending when it mattered by Brenda, who chased after the ball when it seemed impossible , baskets from nowhere from Jenna , and once again in this game, some all round determination from Daisy , saw Sheffield Hatters take well-deserved win this time . Fantastic physical and mental display by the whole team !
