Today Westfield Hatters new WBBL team played their first competitive games in a friendly tournament against Glasgow Rocks, Northumbria and hosts Manchester. They began with a convincing win against their hosts (61-36) and followed this with another good win (51-27) versus Glasgow Rocks. Their toughest test came in the last game versus Northumbria who had also won their other two games. Both teams were tired at the end of a very busy afternoon but the players dug deep and managed to win the close game (58-53). As a spectator and long time follower of the Hatters it was especially pleasing to see the newcomers to the team -Skye, Maria (18) and Jo(16) fitting in and making useful contributions which complemented the returning players – Helen, Naomi, Lauren, Ellis, Georgia (17), and Rosie (18). The victories were particular pleasing as a number of our more senior players were unavailable or injured today (including new signings Estella, and Shanice). Despite the wins I am sure Coach Vanessa Ellis will have seen plenty to work on with the team and I look forward to watching them develop and grow stronger as a team as the season progresses.
