Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters recorded a 58-85 victory over Oaklands Wolves to get their WBBL Championship campaign off to a winning start.
The reigning WBBL Young Player of the Year, Georgia Gayle, netted 23 points, while Brittany Winborne made her mark on debut with an impressive 22 points and 18 rebounds.
Gayle netted back-to-back 3-pointers in an 8-2 start for the visitors and followed with a third soon after. Kyla Nelson kept her side in contention and scored 13 of her side’s 17 points in the opening period.
Having been down by 10 early in the second, the Wolves fought back to tie the game at 29 on a three from Amber Charles. Sheffield restored control and Ellis Clayton netted a late triple to help the visitors into a nine-point advantage going into half-time.
The home side were within seven at the midpoint in the third, but were unable to make any further inroads and faced a 10-point deficit by the end of the period.
Gayle opened the fourth with her fourth three to set the tone for a strong finish with 12 points personal in the quarter as the Hatters racked up 30 in total to pull away for a convincing victory.
Nelson led the Wolves’ resistance with 22 points as they fell to defeat on their WBBL league debut.
