Hatters began their season at Sporting club Albion in Birmingham at 2pm this Saturday 3rd October. They pressed from the start, taking a 13-6 lead with Albions only scores coming from one three point shooter. Hatters’ intense defence which caused problems for Albion, also got Jd Quinn, Courtney Bennett and Jo Lowry in foul trouble early, some of these due to reaching in and others being interesting. Hatters were up 29-17 after the first quarter. Hatters started the second quarter well with 7 points from Jo Lowry in 2 minutes including a three-point play which was repeated later on. Albion fought back with three more three pointers from O. Zegel. Hatters lead was reduced to 51-41 at half time. The second half remained steady with hatters 70-60 up at the end of the third quarter. Excellent defence especially from Millie Dooley, who reduced Albions three point shooter to 2 points overall, enabled Hatters to restrict Albion to three points in the final quarter, despite losing Jo Lowry to a 5th foul. Hatters won the final quarter 22-3, with a final score of 92-63. Best moments from the game included a passing move with a great cut and finish from Goodwin, a trailer play finishing with a three point shot from Lowry, and a great steal from Beth Rutherford finishing with a pass and lay-up from Goodwin.
Free throw shooting was 71% with Lowry hitting 80%, and Silcock and Neath 75%. Scorers were Lowry 27, Bennett 20, Goodwin 12, Neath 11, Dooley 10, Rutherford 7, Silcock 3, and Quinn 2. Top rebounders were Bennett with 13, and Jd with 7.
