Another exciting Hotshots Basketball Event at All Saints Sports Centre where 11 primary school teams battled it out for the Y5 City Championship Title! St Wilfrid’s took the title in style by going unbeaten throughout the tournament, topping their pool and then beating both Stocksbridge (who finished runners-up) and Birley in the “round robin” style final. This rounds off a successful year for St Wilfrid’s who also won the South Yorkshire Hotshots Y4 Final that was held at the EIS last month!
Schools taking part in this event were: St Wilfrid’s, Woodseats, Hinde House, Low Edges, Stocksbridge, Anns Grove, Coit, Marlcliffe, Birley, Hunters Bar and Carfield.
The event was run by Sheffield Hatters volunteer and All Saints SC Programme Manager, Loraine Gayle who has been running the Hotshots Programme for more than 15 years…. “It’s great to see so many young children playing basketball, with so much energy and having fun. The concept of Hotshots is unique in that it allows co-ed primary teams of 8 players, consisting of 4 girls and 4 boys to enter but gives equal playing time and responsibility to the 4 girls in the team which allows total inclusion and integration. We are all aware of the National statistics that show girls are likely to be more inactive than boys even at the age of 8 or 9, therefore we have found Hotshots to be the ideal programme that encourages girls to play sport on the same footing as the boys. Through the Hotshots events we have successfully recruited girls and boys to our basketball programme at All Saints and many of these players have gone on to play with Junior Hatters and Junior Sharks, clubs which are also based at the sports centre.
